Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE), the first national BIPOC led human and animal well-being nonprofit, is thrilled to be the recipient of a $6.5 Million grant from Maddie’s Fund®, a national family foundation established by Dave and Cheryl Duffield to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals. The grant will provide CARE with the funding to pilot a groundbreaking national program called Community Animal CARE, which will help support underserved people and their pets, overcrowded shelters, and chronically overwhelmed veterinarians.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) is offering their Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) virtual course free of charge during the month of June. This $800 scholarship honors the federal holiday Juneteenth. Juneteenth (June 19th), is the US federal holiday that celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. These scholarships are made possible thanks to the generous funding of national animal welfare foundation Maddie’s Fund.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) is proud to announce the creation of a new veterinary committee that will help cultivate the human and animal bond while providing preventative access to veterinary CARE. This group will lead the discussion around human and animal well-being inside schools to support underserved BIPOC communities and their pets across the United States. The group will be also tasked with devising strategies to support veterinary programs in neighborhoods not served by traditional animal welfare nonprofits or veterinary schools.

Not only is James Evans the award-winning Executive Director of Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE), but he is a wildlife photographer who specializes in raptors. He’s one of the few African Americans in his chosen field, but also in his professional hobby as well.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) is hosting its first ever national conference in the City of Brotherly Love. The event will take place at The Hive, located at 30 South 15th St. in Philadelphia on Friday, October 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, October 8 from 9 a.m. to Noon followed by a community event for pets and people. During the community event that is open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Baltimore-based rapper DDm will be performing in the parking lot of Emancipet Low Cost Veterinary Clinic, located at 575 Adams Ave. in Philadelphia.

The December 2021 tornadoes devastated numerous cities throughout Kentucky, but particularly the city of Bowling Green.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity, an animal welfare workforce development nonprofit, is pleased to announce Huston Tillotson University (HT) is the recipient of a $10,000 grant to study how companion animals affect communities of color in Austin, TX. The University’s research will focus on the ownership of pet-related businesses and services and how it is proportional to the demographics of those using their services.

December 2021 will be a month no Kentuckians will ever forget, especially those in Representative Patti Minter’s House District (D-Bowling Green). At least 80 people died, destroying thousands of homes and displacing just as many residents. In Representative Minter’s district, a disproportionate number of fatalities were people of color. Deeply affected, the Bowling Green legislator just introduced a resolution to commemorate those that perished due to Mother Nature’s wrath.

Retired police officer Leslie Miller has always loved dogs. After being denied multiple times and looking for more than a year, the Baltimore resident finally found the Great Dane of her dreams at the Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold, New Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia. Miller will travel to the shelter to pick up Buddy, a two year old brown Great Dane with a black mask, at Berlin Road North in Lindenwold this Friday, February 18 at 1 p.m.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) is proud to unveil its second annual Black History Month Speaker Series. Each Wednesday in February, attendees are invited to join inspiring sessions that will raise funds for CARE’s black veterinary scholarships, named after Dr. Jodie G. Blackwell. The four discussions will feature all black speakers and are designed to spark action to change the two percent.
