African-American wildlife photographer and Poet Donates Profits of Book to support racial equity, diversity, and inclusion in the Animal Welfare Industry
(Baltimore, MD. October 17, 2022) — Not only is James Evans the award-winning Executive Director of Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE), but he is a wildlife photographer who specializes in raptors. He’s one of the few African Americans in his chosen field, but also in his professional hobby as well.
Evans is publishing a new series of his spectacular images and short poems in a book called Among the Birds, I am Human. Throughout the book, the overall theme enforces that in the natural world there is balance, which excludes racism.
“I’ve always been fascinated with wildlife and natural history. I love photographing animals in the field because it gives me a break from human prejudice. When I get too close to a bird and it flies away, I know it’s not because I’m a large black male, and that’s healing in an odd way.”
Evans is not only a talented visual artist and creator, but he founded the Baltimore-based nonprofit, CARE, after being tired of seeing the exclusionary practices of the predominantly white animal welfare industry. CARE is a workforce development nonprofit that aims to empower members of BIPOC communities across the United States to start their own animal welfare nonprofits.
Evans is self-publishing the book which can be found on Amazon, and all of the proceeds of the book will go to CARE’s Environmental Justice Division. 100 percent of every book will directly benefit the new animal welfare nonprofit.
The book, full of gorgeous photos and words, will be available on Amazon.com November 1, just in time for Giving Tuesday. Evans is available for interviews about his new one-of-a-kind creative endeavor.
Evans also was honored last week by Maddie’s Fund with the 2022 Avanzino Leadership Award for his outstanding leadership and purposeful dedication to the human-animal bond. Maddie’s Fund is one of the major animal welfare funders in the United States.
