Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity Hires New Senior Director of Research
Sloane Hawes is ready to change the way animal welfare research is done through an inclusive and participatory process
(Baltimore, MD. May 31, 2023) — Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE), a 501©3 national nonprofit is pleased to announce the appointment of Sloane Hawes as an additional Senior Director of Research Development, which will allow the Baltimore-based advocacy group to create equity for not only humans, but animals as well.
Prior to joining CARE, Sloane was assistant director of research at the Institute for Human-Animal Connection (IHAC), which is part of the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work. She led a research agenda that uses community-based participatory research methods to examine how animal welfare, social justice, and ecological justice issues connect. Her experience ties in perfectly with the mission of CARE, which is to address organizational and personal biases in animal welfare.
With her experience, Hawes will join the research team of scholar-activists to make sure community participation within vulnerable populations is always a part of the research methodology. Unlike many other research projects, the complete data will also be presented back to the people it is actually trying to help.
Hawes will be joining CARE the first week of June and is “excited and pleased to deepen the nonprofit’s impact in calling attention to the injustices of animal welfare.” Her research will be just part of many studies the Baltimore-based nonprofit conducts thanks to major funders such as Purina, Petsmart Charities, Tito’s Vodka for Dog People, Spring Point Partners, and Maddie’s Fund. Hawes is available for interviews on her methodology for conducting research with the help of communities of color.
