New Atlanta nonprofit BraveHeart Pets is Tim Freeman’s dream to fuel his passion for dog training, while sharing his talent with his community. A dog trainer by trade, Freeman will offer free or affordable dog training to Atlanta area pet owners who can least afford it.

Sometimes the best way to care for pets is to care for their people too. That’s why New York Giants Defensive Back, Logan Ryan, and his nonprofit, Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation (RARF) is teaming up with Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) to make the holiday special for people and their pets. Social media influencer Keeping Finn is funding veterinary spay neuter and wellness services which will be offered at the event with the help of Emancipet Nonprofit Veterinary Services and Homeward Bound Animal Shelter, the local animal welfare organization in Camden. Purina will be donating thousands of pounds of cat and dog food.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) College of Social Work will be conducting a groundbreaking study to assess racial disparities in animal welfare organizations across the United States. Nonprofit Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) will fund the study, which will look at four animal welfare organizations in Charlotte, N.C., Los Angeles, Calif., Dallas, Tex. and Tucson, Ariz.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) are proud to partner with the first ever Awesiinyag Are Loved Clinic for Pets August 16-18 at the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota. This is one of the few animal welfare events that considers cultural appropriateness for the people being served by bringing them to the table. With tribal input and permission, pet owners who are part of the Anishinaabeg of Red Lake Nation will be able to access a variety of veterinary services, such as free vaccination and wellness checks, and spay/neuter services to stop pet overpopulation.

It’s no secret the animal welfare industry lacks diversity and equity, and is not always welcoming to people of color. Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) is a nonprofit started last year to disrupt and reshape the way this nation addresses the needs of not only dogs and cats, but more importantly the people across all boundaries who share their lives with them. To be successful in this important campaign, the right people need to lead the effort.

When you own a pet and don’t have resources, taking your cat or dog to the vet poses a lot of challenges. Most people don’t understand that transportation is extremely difficult for low income people with pets. Public transportation doesn’t allow pets to be transported and most taxis or Uber rides won’t transport an animal as well.
