The Baltimore-based nonprofit is pleased to announce the support of a new CARE Center in the Philadelphia area, to assist the work of Hakeem Ruiz, who is a native Philadelphian.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE), a Baltimore based nonprofit that addresses organizational and personal biases in animal welfare, is granting $26,500 to two independent researchers, Nefta Fonseca and Kendall Gilliam, to assess the experience, barriers and issues of importance of pet owners in the Bowling Green, KY area who were forced to deal with the aftereffects of Mother Nature’s wrath. The December 2021 tornadoes devastated numerous cities throughout Kentucky, but particularly the city of Bowling Green.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity, an animal welfare workforce development nonprofit, is pleased to announce Huston Tillotson University (HT) is the recipient of a $10,000 grant to study how companion animals affect communities of color in Austin, TX. The University’s research will focus on the ownership of pet-related businesses and services and how it is proportional to the demographics of those using their services.

December 2021 will be a month no Kentuckians will ever forget, especially those in Representative Patti Minter’s House District (D-Bowling Green). At least 80 people died, destroying thousands of homes and displacing just as many residents. In Representative Minter’s district, a disproportionate number of fatalities were people of color. Deeply affected, the Bowling Green legislator just introduced a resolution to commemorate those that perished due to Mother Nature’s wrath.

Retired police officer Leslie Miller has always loved dogs. After being denied multiple times and looking for more than a year, the Baltimore resident finally found the Great Dane of her dreams at the Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold, New Jersey, just outside of Philadelphia. Miller will travel to the shelter to pick up Buddy, a two year old brown Great Dane with a black mask, at Berlin Road North in Lindenwold this Friday, February 18 at 1 p.m.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) is proud to unveil its second annual Black History Month Speaker Series. Each Wednesday in February, attendees are invited to join inspiring sessions that will raise funds for CARE’s black veterinary scholarships, named after Dr. Jodie G. Blackwell. The four discussions will feature all black speakers and are designed to spark action to change the two percent.

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity are trying to change the veterinary and animal welfare industry. One of the least diverse out of all fields in the United States, the numbers are staggering: only two percent of veterinarians in the United States are African American.

It’s no secret, walk into most animal shelters and in many parts of the country, you’ll probably not see a person of color. The CARE Givers Circle is a new membership group that serves to support BIPOC communities that have not been traditionally represented in the animal welfare industry. The Circle is needed to bring more diverse voices and perspectives into the human animal well-being movement. From executive leadership roles to service employees, the CARE Givers Circle hopes to connect ALL people who want to advocate for people who have been historically marginalized.
