OUR MISSION

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE), in the interest of Human and Animal Well-Being, prioritizes and amplifies BIPOC and other Marginalized Voices using Narratives, Research, and Community-Centered Investments.

Our Method For Change

CARE CENTERS

Community Wisdom, Community Solutions

CARE is supporting and investing in community leaders focused on sustainable and transformative solutions.

COMMUNITY ANIMAL CARE

Community Wisdom Amplified

Community Animal CARE [CAC] is an innovative Public Health centered program designed to prevent and solve persistent challenges to Human and Animal Well-Being. CAC will deliver critical resources to community members led by Proximate Leaders. In particular, Access to Care and Prevention, Pet Behavioral Training, Pet Resources, Compliance Awareness, Lost and Found Pets, and Involuntary Surrender Prevention.

THE CIRCLE OF LEARNING AND LEADERSHIP

Informed people make better choices.

The Circle of Learning and Leadership is a unique BIPOC-led educational experience with an ecosystem centered on Racial Equity, Community Wisdom, and Access to Preventive Care. Our goal is to bridge the information gap between traditional Animal Welfare and marginalized communities.

NARRATIVES

Hear My Story. See My Heart.

Stories shape our vision of the world and often frame our perceptions and biases. For this reason, CARE is producing and sharing stories that celebrate the diversity within human and animal well-being.

Honor… don’t extract, or pretend.

“No culture should be romanticized or denigrated: like all others, Indians should be understood and evaluated on their own terms”

It`s common to judge a neighborhood`s safety based on visible litter, leading to harmful stereotypes about its residents.

However, the presence of trash often stems from systemic neglect and inconsistent waste management, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.

Cleanliness should not dictate our perceptions of people, let alone whole neighborhoods and cultures.
_________
"At Disneyland, you`re always within 30 feet of a trash can.

This is deliberate. You never see litter on park grounds.

In our actual cities?

Not a trash can in sight. It`s a form of hostile architecture. We blame litter on the homeless instead of bad design.

Policy choices."

Imagine if the promises this country made to Black and Indigenous people were also the promises that were kept.

How greatly would we benefit if land was given back and the vision of true reparations came to life?

What would our communities look like?

It’s impossible to know what a just future would look like. But one thing’s for certain: EVERYONE would benefit if our nation’s most exploited and vulnerable were taken care of.

______
“Imagine if Reconstruction had actually honored the citizenship of four million freedpeople—provided the education, political autonomy, and economic wherewithal warranted by their and their ancestors’ hundreds of years of free labor. If, instead of continually re-fighting the Civil War, we had actually moved on to rebuilding a strong, viable South, a South where poor whites, too—for they had been left out as well—could gain access to proper education. Imagine”

🍂 October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, an event created in 1981 to highlight the increasing number of dogs and puppies entering shelters. 🐕‍🦺

Over the past three years, nearly a million more pets have entered the nation`s animal shelters and facilities. Last year, for the first time since 2016, more dogs than cats were euthanized.

🔺 The shelter and rescue populations in the U.S. have increased by 900,000 overall since January 2021. In 2023, more than 359,000 dogs were euthanized, marking a five-year peak. Meanwhile, 330,000 cats were euthanized last year.

🐾 Supporting Adopt a Shelter Dog Month can be done in various ways, with adoption being the best option. However, adoption isn`t the only way to support shelter dogs.

There are countless ways to support cherished shelter dogs and the dedicated staff who ensure their well-being, including adopting or fostering a shelter dog, volunteering at a shelter or rescue organization, making a donation to support their cause, participating in shelter events, and raising awareness about dogs in need of loving homes.

👨🏼‍💻 CARE`s REDI Training offers a transformative ecosystem crucial for animal well-being. Embracing a REDI approach empowers organizations to forge stronger partnerships with the community and decrease the influx of animals into shelters. By embracing REDI, we can diminish implicit biases in pet adoption and give loving dogs a happy home.
