Performative Allyship
Performative allyship occurs when a group or an individual from a majority or privileged group (white/straight/cis/abled) professes their support of and/or solidarity with a marginalized group (identifies themselves as an ally) in a way that either isn’t helpful to that group, draws attention away from that group, or actively harms that group.

DEI work is typically an add-on for the organization. In other words, DEI is not integrated into every aspect of the organization’s work, and therefore is ineffective at creating real change. The image below shows how DEI is most often implemented at organizations, as a separate, disconnected program. Consider how the first image below differs from the second, and why the second is a better and more effective approach.

When an organization is VetREDI, exchanges in power at all levels mean different voices are heard. Initiatives are strengthened by different talents, skills, and experiences.
Based on what you’ve learned, what is the issue with the first image below? Think a moment before moving on to the second image.
