Intentional Language

Asking what thoughts come to mind with a word is an exercise in knowing that context is huge, as well as interpretation, biases, and preconceived notions. As we are surrounded with terminology and jargon in the profession, how we interact with each other (versed in the veterinary language) usually differs from how we interact with clients, community members, family, and friends. Why? Sometimes it’s the scientific vs. colloquial terminology, but it’s also a reflection of the familiarity we have with the topic. 

Take a moment to reflect on the way we typically think about and/or use some common terms. Next consider how to increase our conscious awareness of perceptions around particular terms for ourselves, our teammates, and for those we interact with outside of our team.
